Sau. Vandana N. Tasgaonkar Ayurved Mahavidyalaya & Research Centre (VTAM) is an Ayurvedic medical college at Karjat in Raigad district, Maharashtra, established in 2024 under the Saraswati Education Society. Offering the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) degree, the college is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik, recognized by the Government of Maharashtra, and approved by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) under reference AYU0871. With fourteen specialised Ayurvedic departments and the attached 100-bed Jeevak Ayurved Rugnalaya, VTAM blends classical Ayurvedic wisdom with evidence-based modern healthcare practice.
Sau. Vandana N. Tasgaonkar Ayurved Mahavidyalaya & Research Centre, popularly known as VTAM, is one of the newest additions to the Dr. N. Y. Tasgaonkar Educational Complex at Bhivpuri Road, Karjat, in Maharashtra's Raigad district. Founded in 2024 under the umbrella of the Saraswati Education Society, the college was named in honour of Sau. Vandana N. Tasgaonkar and was established to carry forward the trust's mission of meaningful, research-driven education into the field of traditional Indian medicine. It received its permission to begin instruction for the 2024 academic session under NCISM reference AYU0871.
The college offers the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) — a 5.5-year professional medical degree comprising 4.5 years of structured coursework followed by a one-year compulsory rotatory internship. The programme grounds students in the ancient science of Ayurveda while equipping them with the clinical reasoning, diagnostic discipline, and practical skills required to practise confidently in a contemporary healthcare environment.
Academically, VTAM is organised into fourteen departments that span the full breadth of the Ayurvedic syllabus prescribed by NCISM. These include the pre-clinical foundations of Rachana Sharir (Anatomy) and Kriya Sharir (Physiology); the pharmaceutical and pharmacological sciences of Dravyaguna and Rasashastra & Bhaishyajya Kalpana; the diagnostic disciplines of Vikruti Vigyan & Rognidan and Agadtantra; and the major clinical specialities of Kayachikitsa, Panchakarma, Shalyatantra, Shalakyatantra, Prasutitantra & Stree Roga, and Kaumarbhritya & Balaroga, alongside Swasthavritta & Yoga and Sanskrit Samhita Siddhant.
At the heart of clinical training is Jeevak Ayurved Rugnalaya, the college's attached 100-bed teaching hospital. The hospital provides OPD and IPD services across six clinical departments and delivers authentic Panchakarma therapies — Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya, and Raktamokshana — under the supervision of experienced physicians. It serves as the living laboratory where students translate textbook knowledge into hands-on patient care.
VTAM is affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences in Nashik and is recognized by the Government of Maharashtra and the NCISM, Delhi, under the Ministry of AYUSH framework. Admissions to the BAMS programme are conducted through the NEET-based centralised counselling process administered by the Maharashtra CET Cell, Mumbai, and the Admission Regulating Authority (ARA), Mumbai.
